The Birds

About 6 months ago, I purchased the Canon R-5. I love it. I have been doing people primarily, and now I had a chance to do the animal eye detection on this camera. It did not let me down.

The Dominican Republic

When I travel and walkabout, I use the Aperture Priority setting at F5.6 with an ISO of 200-400. I use this because most of the time, when I am walking, it is daytime, and I will get the speed I need. I had fun with these birds. I call it birds in love. After all, its SPRING :)

Nice Vacation

It’s been some time since I have placed a post. I have been busy with things I can’t publish yet, and yes, I took some time off to enjoy our first cruise since 2019. We had a great time and lots of exciting pictures.

While waiting for my wife to get ready for the evening, I watched this tug watching us and thought I could use this picture. I love the way the water splashed over the boat. Then I wanted to find a saying that would match the scene. Yes, we got back to a few challenges—nothing new. But as the phrase say, Life goes on. So true.

Good Morning Cincinnati, Ohio

Good morning Cincinnati! Last week I needed to go to 3 large cities in three days. Usually, I always carry my Canon equipment with me, but I have been playing more and more with my iPhone, and this is the case again. While I say this, if I am on a professional job, I can do more and better with my Canon equipment.( at least at this time)

As much time I practice my photography, I also do this in my post processing. I have been recently going thru some classes with Ricord learning true compositing. I say true because I want to make it seem like it was there. Some call this not natural photography. I call it art and, yes, photography. Just about every picture is corrected one way or another that you see on the web, in magazines, and so on. The cameras do have their limitation.

I looked at this photo from my hotel room. Out came my iPhone, and I made about four shots and looked at which one was best as far as focus. The original sky was nothing to write home about, so you got it; the sky was replaced with a sky I wanted and made it feel like a sunrise. But, most importantly, for me, a picture I like.

Iphone again

While attending a wedding as a participant and not the photographer. I could not help myself with my iPhone. I saw this gift and said to myself, I like that I need a picture and maybe use it sometimes. So I went around the gift and wanted to take the picture backlit.

Fun with the iPhone

When I got home, I transferred the picture to Lightroom and made some adjustments. Next went through some stock photos of a beach and came up with what you see.

I guess I am saying that the iPhone is a camera and can do things just like some of those thousands of dollars cameras. So don’t use the excuse I need an excellent camera. No, you need a camera to come up with great ideas. Have fun making art.

Playing and learning

The cool thing about photography is that you can do it anytime. I like to practice and learn and then practice some more. Today I wanted to play with gel lights and practice shadows and highlights. So I grabbed something that would not complain, and I worked with what I had. For I was at a bed and breakfast place, I had no idea I would do this.

I had two lights, one light stand, and my gels. The first thing I wanted to do was light from behind to give it backlight. Using a CTO gel and a MagMod Grid, I set this up first. I liked what I had, but way too much shadow in the front. I knew I wanted to reflect light back into the front but did not have one, or did I. Yep, pillowcase to the rescue. I brought in really close to the left side and got what I wanted. Next was to set up the fill light. I wanted the shadows to fill in with blue—my second light I set up using a blue gel. I had no light stand, so I set the light on the floor and flashed on the ceiling. Yep, I took advantage of a giant softbox with a flash of blue to fill in shadows with blue. It worked and did what I wanted without using Photoshop.

So much playing and learning. Just another thing to put into my back pocket.
