Telling a Story
Photography is all about storytelling — storytelling of a moment that will never be repeated. The story for me in this picture was when I had the opportunity to take photos of her parent's wedding. That was a great story; it’s self. For you see, less then 24 hours before they’re wedding, their wedding photographer could not make it. With less than 24 hours, I went from complete strangers to being very welcome.
That brings us to today. What is the story? This one, I believe, is simply a 1-year-old who was experiencing her first cake. She did the acting, and I did the job of documenting the moment. This was a simple setup. I set up one flash camera left with a large umbrella. Our job as photographers when it comes to events, weddings, and so on. Document the moment, Let the actors be actors, and are job is to capture it. Capture it so that you do not need to explain what is going on. Kids are always challenging because you never know what you are going to get. Most of the day, she was not in the happiest mood. But you would never know it. Have fun documenting your event. Be ready, because that moment can happen at any time. You need to know your equipment because moments will not wait for you to figure it out.
